Maximilian Johnson is aN artist from Brooklyn, New York.
Spanning media from writing to music production, Max’s body of work is tied together, regardless of how loose the knot may seem, by process. Max presents his work as products of spontaneity, vulnerable glimpses into his perspective on the world around him, dealings with turbulent thoughts—
Lacking a formal education in the arts, Max offers himself to the observer as an outsider. Unskilled and naive, Max leans into his limitations as he creates products that are somehow both abstract by choice and necessity. Rather than skilled, intricate brushwork, Max’s work relies primarily on concept and aesthetic; obsessed with interconnection, Max acknowledges his art as a product of experience, each element resulting from the nature of the present moment, rather than a deliberate choice dictated by the self.
Having spent extended periods of time in the Kansai region of Japan, Max artistic process has undoubtedly been shaped through the innumerable hours spent in the art studios of Seika University. Taking inspiration from his contemporaries in both New York City and Kyoto, Max creates to contribute to a world that he truly believes is enriched by artistic output. Art inspires one to look at life through a lens that finds beauty in mundanity, beauty in nature, beauty in others— beauty in ourselves as a reflection of it all.
